Welcome to Irish Sport Horse Agent
Importing and producing quality horses and ponies.
Irish Sport Horse Agent otherwise known as “Penhills” is based at Penhills Farm in Salperton, near Cheltenham a family business by Joanne Holder and Bernie Wharfe. We travel regularly to Ireland to personally select horses for temperament and conformation. We specialise in buying and producing quality young horses and ponies to be aimed at top level competition in their chosen discipline. We have long-established relationships with proven sources in Ireland, we acquires many of our horses direct from farmers, private owners and through the auction sales.
Penhills Farm has an excellent range of facilities to trial any horse.
Large school with good range of show jumps and selection of cross country jumps including ditch, corner and tyres.
We source Irish bred horses for Eventing, Show Jumping, Hunting and Dressage. They are mostly Irish bred with the occasional horse from Holland or Belgium. Mainly we try to buy between 3 and 6 year olds, selected for their conformation, movement and ability. Above all a lovely temperament is a must.
We make multiple trips to Ireland throughout the year and welcome any clients that wish to join us for a professional opinion on any horse or pony.
We have produced many horses that have gone on to be sold to many high profile riders around the world and compete at the very top of their chosen disciplines. We seem to possess an uncanny/rare knack of seeing the finished article in the raw young horse, buying it and then developing its potential for our clients to buy and progress. Our skill extends to matching the right horses to the right clients.
After choosing a horse we then put them through our system. This involves several elements:
•Schooling them out on the farm in natural open country, ditches, rails, water and general hacking etc; as well as
•Hunting them (if chosen discipline for this horse), and XC schooling; in addition to
•Show jump training and show jumping competition experience, both at regular venues and at shows on grass; and
•Quietly and effectively working and improving them on the flat to give them a sound dressage foundation.
Bernie believes passionately that the most influential stage in a horse’s training is at the beginning where confidence and braveness are nurtured. Bernie spends a lot of time working closely with the Young horses and has successfully broken in many horses from race horses to top class event horses.
Please contact us with your requirements and come for a viewing in a relaxed, friendly and professional yard. We have superb on-site trial facilities with an outdoor rubber arena, show jumps, great hacking and a basic x/c course to suit all abilities.
We welcome instructors and advise clients to have horses and ponies vetted prior to purchase.
We work mostly from word off mouth and we have lots off return business. You could say we are very much an all-rounder yard, the satisfaction of our clients is of paramount importance to us, and we provide ourselves on our impeccable reputation.
The Yard is just 20 minutes from Junction 11a off the M5 motorway making it easily accessible from all areas. Set in a stunning location just 15 minutes from Cheltenham town and within 60 minutes drive of either Birmingham or Bristol airports.
Terms of Business
Descriptions: All of our horses on the team are carefully described by our trained staff who work with them on a daily basis and represent their opinion of their behaviour and experience to date.
A member of staff will ride the horse for the potential purchaser and once they are happy that the horse is suited to them we welcome you to ride the horse without obligation to the purchase.
Vettings: You are strongly advised to have an independent veterinary exam before purchase.
Deposit: If you wish to reserve a horse (which means we won’t sell him to anyone else), a deposit of £200 CASH is required. We have been forced to introduce this as a result of the many people who put in “firm” offers but then change their minds weeks later, resulting in lost time and money. The reserve deposit is refundable if the horse fails a vet inspection. PLEASE NOTE: a deposit is valid for ONE WEEK ONLY. We have new buyers looking for horses at all times, and we cannot hold horses longer than a week.
Contracts: Every horse is sold under contract. The horse is sold as described and once successfully passed a veterinary inspection we have no obligation to take the horse back, however it is not in our interest to have unhappy clients we therefore always endeavour to advise clients on the horse that matches there requirements from the off set to the final sale.
Once a horse passes its vet’s exam, we regard the horse as sold, and we have no legal obligation to take it back. However, we do not want a customer to have a horse that doesn’t suit them, so we will always try to exchange an unsuitable horse for one of equivalent value. The horse must be returned within one month of the date of sale. No refunds are given.
